Afghanistan is a living example of it. Growing up in that country I heard the Western diplomates and politicians and military generals assuring us about the unwavering and continues support of the West of our democracy, freedom and etc a million times. In the end, they made a deal with the Taliban and just left. The moment the West reach the conclusion that the war in Ukraine is not sustainable they will pack their things and leave.
