Farzana Vafayee was born in Sang Takht and Bander District, one of the remote and very mountainous districts of Daikundi Province in Hazaristan, Afghanistan. It hasn’t been easy for her to get to university with those problems we read about later. When Farzana was small, her house was eight kilometers away from school. For 12 years, little Farzana walked eight kilometers daily to school.

The difficult commute was daunting for little Farzana in the early years. Later, as she grew older and got to know the school teachers, she asked them to help her. She had told them that she could not come to school every day. She wanted teachers to help her and make a time adjustment. They helped her, so Farzana came to school three days a week and studied the rest of the day to herself at home.

Farzana self-studied the school subjects without teachers. For Farzana, the path has been bent and complex. Many of the subjects and lessons she did not understand before remained unfinished for a long time. There was no one in the family to guide her. Farzana is the fifth child of illiterate parents. Her mother cannot read and write, but her father can read and write. Her four older brothers…
