The relationship between China and Afghanistan has witnessed significant shifts over the years, encompassing various political, economic, and security dimensions. As one of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, China’s interests in the region have grown, driven by its strategic goals, resource requirements, and regional stability concerns. China’s engagement strategy with the de facto government appears to be concentrated on seeking investment opportunities while insisting that the Taliban sever ties with the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM). Conversely, the Taliban’s stance towards China is more complex. Taliban is seeking political backing and economic investment from China while receiving a weekly sum of 40 million USD from the United States. This situation creates a nuanced interplay of interests and alliances.

We investigate the evolving relationship between China and Afghanistan under the Taliban, exploring the dynamics, challenges, and prospects that define this complex partnership. The analysis sheds light on the China-Afghanistan engagement and what it means for the region amidst China’s military and economic rise.
