Over the years, I learned five languages out of need, not pleasure. Learning the first language is always tricky. Learning Pashto was very tough; I spent hours during my schooling years. I still have problems conjugating verbs and tenses in Pashto while speaking, but I can communicate what I mean. After that, I had to learn English; it remains my academic language. I learned to speak Hindi without learning its script. Intuitively, I speak Hindi more quickly (grammatically incorrect, most probably), after my mother tongue, Persian. Da due anni sto imaparando italiano. Adesso, io posso capire cinque lingue e ascolto la musica nel tutti questi lingue. I have an elementary understanding of French. Planning to pick up French, German, Chinese, and Arabic before I die.
You practically live a separate life for each language that you speak. After learning these languages, I started hating the translation industry, although that is my profession nowadays.
It is a very informative article.
