The Chronology of the Taliban’s Ban on Women: A Disturbing Trend in Afghanistan

The plight of women in Afghanistan has taken a regressive and alarming turn following the collapse of the US and NATO-backed governments on August 15th, 2021. Since the Taliban’s takeover, a series of oppressive measures have been enacted, systematically curtailing women’s rights and participation in public life. Here’s a chronological look at the alarming restrictions imposed by the Taliban:

August 2021: Banning Education for Older Girls

Following their takeover, the Taliban quickly banned girls from attending school between the grades of 6 to 12. This move was a shocking blow to the progress made in women’s education in Afghanistan over the last two decades.

December 2021: Further Restrictions on Education

In December, the Taliban extended their ban to include girls from Universities. Although their official decree did not specifically ban girls from primary education, reports have emerged of Taliban soldiers stopping girls from attending even these basic educational facilities. Female teachers were also disallowed from teaching, another devastating blow to the country’s education system.
